New Intel Xeon E5-2600 V4 CPUs with the 22-core behemoth

4/22/2016, Milan Šurkala
The number of cores in CPUs is still increasing and the new Xeon E5-2600 Broadwell-EP line includes 22-core behemoth E5-2699 V4. The range of the new processors covers everything from 50W low-energy CPUs to 160W versions.
Intel has just released the new family of server processors called Xeon E5-2600. There are 27 different CPUs from low-energy ones to the extremely powerful and energy hungry ones. These processors are specially optimized for dual socket systems. The flagship is called Xeon E5-2699 V4 and it has 22 cores(!), moreover, it also supports Hyper-Threading technology. If you use two of them, you will be able to run 88 threads at once. Xeon E5-2699 V4 has an enormous 55MB cache memory and its base frequency is 2.2 GHz. TDP was set to 145 W and Turbo frequency can be up to 3.6 GHz.

All models support DDR4-2400 memory (improvement from DDR4-2133 in comparison with the previous generation) and 24 DIMMs are supported. Intel said that 1536 GB of RAM memory was supported. In the case of E5-2699 V4, you will need $4115 to buy it. Intel has improved its Turbo Boost technology that works more efficiently when mixed with AVX instructions and AVX2 architecture was overall optimized with the support of 256-bit vectors. Virtualization performance has been improved too.

New CPUs support the ADCX/ADOX and PCLMULQDQ instructions that improve the speed of key encryption algorithm like RSA or SHA up to 70 %. The new Xeon E5-2600 V4 family includes CPUs with 4 to 22 cores and TDP from 50 W (eight-core 1.6GHz E5-2608L V4) to 160 W (12-core 3.0 GHz Xeon E5-2687W V4). The price ranges from $213 (6-core 1.7 Xeon E5-2603 V4) to $4115.
