Water-resistant Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus with RAW capture

9/8/2016, Milan Šurkala
Long-awaited smartphones Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 are here. Both smartphones are water-resistant with IP67 rating, their cameras were improved and got RAW capture and dual lens in iPhone 7 Plus case. Apple has also removed 3.5mm jack but that is not all.
Apple has just released new smartphones iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Next to silver, gold and rose gold, there are black and super glossy Jet Black options. Both smartphones are water-resistant with IP67 rating. Home button is solid-state and uses Taptic Engine to provide a feedback.

Cameras still have 12MPx resolution but they were improved a lot. The aperture was increased to F1.8 and, therefore, provides 50 % more light than previous models. Both smartphones have an optical image stabilization. The lens has 6 elements and the camera uses True Tone flash with four LEDs. 35mm-equivalent focal length is 28 mm.

Apple iPhone 7 Plus has two cameras. The first one is the same as in the first case but the second one is different. Its equivalent focal length is 56 mm (similar to 2× optical zoom in comparison with the first one). If you want to zoom, the second camera is used. Because of two cameras, the new ISP can compute a depth map, recognize foreground and blur a background. The camera can achieve a nice bokeh that you usually do not expect from a smartphone. The second camera has F2.8 aperture.

4K video capture is supported in 30p mode. If you shoot Full HD video (1920×1080 pixels), 60p is also supported and both models provide slow-motion Full HD video at 120 fps or HD video (1280×720 pixels) at 240 fps. There is an optical stabilization in the video mode, a continuous autofocus and you can use a time-lapse mode. For the first time, RAW capture (DNG files) is supported. The front camera has a 7MPx resolution and F2.2 aperture.

Both smartphones have Retina HD screens with IPS LED technology but their resolution was not increased. Apple iPhone 7 has a 4.7" screen with 1334×750 pixels resolution (326 ppi) and the 1400:1 contrast. iPhone 7 Plus has a larger 5.5" screen with Full HD resolution, 401ppi density and the maximal contrast of 1300:1. Both screens provides wide color gamut, 3D Touch technology and their brightness was increased by 25 %.

Processor was improved too. It is a quad-core chip A10 Fusion with two fast and two slower cores. These cores have 5 times lower energy consumption and, therefore, the battery life was improved. The performance is about 40 % higher than A9 provides. The GPU is also faster and its performance is 50 % higher in comparison with iPhone 6S.

Apple has increased all memory levels to 32 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB. Apple has made very interesting step and increased the memory for iPhone 6S models too even though their prices were lowered to the former iPhone 6 levels. The 64GB version of iPhone SE is cheaper too.

There are stereo speakers that can be twice as loud. As was expected, there is no 3.5mm jack anymore and Apple is using Lightning port only. The port is already there and Apple could save the space. Removal of jack is also the act of courage according to Tim Cook. Because of potential compatibility issues, 3.5mm jack adapter is included. Apple has also unveiled wireless AirPods headphones.

Both iPhones support 450Mbps LTE and iOS 10 operating system (it will be released on September 10). There is also  Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC for ApplePay, GPS and GLONASS support.

The iPhone 7 dimensions are 138,3×67,1×7,1 mm a it weighs 138 grams (4.87 ounces). iPhone 7 Plus is larger with 158,2×77,9×7,3 mm and really heavy (188 grams, 6.63 ounces). The prices were set to $649 (32 GB), $749 (128 GB), and $849 (256 GB) in iPhone 7 case. Larger iPhone 7 Plus costs $769 (32 GB), $869 (128 GB), and $969 (256 GB).
